Basic Leader Training

Basic Leader Training is set up in three steps:

  1. Fast Start is given at the unit level or may be taken online.
  2. New Leader Essentials is given at the District level.
  3. Leader Specific Training is given at the District level.
STEP 1:   FAST START

Fast Start training is the first step for any new volunteer and is to be delivered immediately after a new leader registers and before he or she meets with any youth member.  Fast Start training provides an immediate comfort level for new leaders and enables them to say, "I can do this!"

STEP 2:   NEW LEADER ESSENTIALS

New Leader Essentials is an introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting.  It addresses how these aims and methods are reached in an age-appropriate style within Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, and Venturing.  Videos, discussions, and hands-on reinforcement are presented during the 90-minute training session.  Ideally, all unit-based volunteers-Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing leaders take this session at the same time, so they understand that they are all striving for the same results with the youth they serve.  Each leader completes New Leader Essentials training only once.

STEP 3:  LEADER SPECIFIC

Cub Scout Leader Specific Boy Scout Leader Specific Venturing Leader Specific
Tiger Cub Den Leaders, Cub Scout Den Leaders, Webelos Den Leaders, Cubmasters, and Pack Committee members can complete this training in one day or two evenings. The leader is considered trained upon completion of New Leader Essentials and the Leader Specific training for their current position.

For Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, this training is divided into four parts.  The first three parts concentrate on Troop operation and can be completed in one full day.  The fourth part, which focuses on outdoor skills, lasts approximately a day and a half, depending on the skill level of the new leader. The leader is considered trained upon completion of New Leader Essentials, Boy Scout Leader Specific Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.

Developed for Venturing Advisors, Associate Advisors, and Crew Committee members, this training incorporates Venturing's current adult leader training.  New Leader Essentials and Venturing Leader Specific Training can be completed in one day, after which the leader is considered to be trained.

  Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills

Outdoor skills are critical to the success of the Scouting program, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills will provide leaders with the basic outdoor skills information needed to start a program right.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is the required outdoor training for all Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters. The skills taught are based on the outdoor skills found in The Boy Scout Handbook and expected of a First Class Scout. The course is also ideal for Venturing leaders because it focuses on skills that build confidence and competence in leaders conducting outdoor camping experiences.

BALOO Troop Committee Challenge

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation is a one-day training event that introduces parents and leaders to the skills needed to plan and conduct Pack outdoor activities, particularly Pack camping.

This training is required for any adult who is in charge of planning a Pack campout, and it is recommended that one adult per Pack complete BALOO training.

Advanced Leader Training

Woodbadge for the 21st Century

Woodbadge has evolved into the core leadership skills training course for the BSA.  The Woodbadge course focuses on strengthening every volunteer's ability to work with and lead groups of youth and adults and is less focused on outdoor skills, which are more effectively addressed in other courses.  It is open to leaders in all programs.

the Canaveral District Training Team,

Powder Horn

The Powder Horn course is designed to introduce and expose Venturing and Boy Scouting adult unit leaders to the activities and resources necessary to operate a successful outdoor/high adventure unit-level program.  It is intended to help adult leaders get out of the box in finding and using resources and in the way they lead their unit-level high adventure programs. No high adventure skills are taught in this course. It is designed to have some disciplines introduced with a hands-on segment.  Leaders will learn where to go to find those who can teach these skills to Boy Scouts and Venturers.

SOME POINTS OF CLARIFICATION

A person must complete New Leader Essentials only once.  If their position changes, they merely have to attend the Leader Specific courses listed for their new position to be considered trained.

Ideally, Fast Start Training should be taken by a leader within 48 hours of their taking a volunteer position, and it is recommended that it be completed before any part of the training process. Cub Scout, Boy Scout & Venturing Fast Start videos are also great as parent orientation tools.

BALOO training is required of the person in charge of any Cub Scout Pack campout or outing.

Scoutmasters & Assistant Scoutmasters must complete both Leader Specific Training AND Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills Training in order to wear the "Trained" emblem.

Roundtable is considered a training event and is a requirement to earn your Leader Training Recognition Knots.  Proof of attendance must be submitted with your application.

Basic Leader Training completion is required to earn your  Leader Training Recognition Knots.  Proof of training completion must be submitted with your application.

The red, white and blue completion cards issued after training sessions are like your Scouting "driver's license".  DO NOT LOOSE THEM!  They are proof that you took a specific course and are not valid unless signed by an authorized District or Council Trainer.
